Notes:
The 2nd show of the band's Fifth U.K tour, this show doesn't feature the 1st ever live performances of songs the band had previously not attempted on stage before (i.e: "Since I've Been Loving You", and "Thank You"), but this recording is the first live recording to capture those previously unplayed songs.
While I was working on this show, I came across an interesting bit of trivia, for those that may not know, this show actually takes place on Elvis Presley's birthday.
The next day, the band would play their infamous Royal Albert Hall show (January, 9th, 1970), which took place on Jimmy's birthday.
I just found that kind of interesting that they played a show on Elvis' birthday (a musician the band really reverred), and that the next day they played a show on Jimmy's birthday.
I'd like to quote from a review about the bands performance from Argenteumastrum.com:
This recording is very distant and dull but still rather clearly listenable in quiter moments. The problem is that this tape lacks most of bottom end so the sound is very thin.
A killer show! Robert's voice is in great shape and the band tear through the set, and include what is probably the first ever performance of Since I've Been Loving You, with different lyrics and a different arrangement but still exciting.
"We've got an LP coming out in three months, and it's called Led Zeppelin 19.
We're just gonna keep putting them out!" Plant jokes while he's introducing a new material.
Near the end he also jokes more: "Tonto turned into a door and the Lone Ranger shot his knob off!" according to a joke that he has been trying to tell earlier in the concert.
The encores destroy the crowd after the gutsy How Many More Times.
I understand the punchline of that "Lone Ranger" joke, I just don't particularly find it all that funny.
What we've done to make this project:
This project was a bit of a difficult tape to work with, it was hard trying to find a balance in the instruments without making one instrument or musician dominate over the others, but we do hope that everyone here enjoys what we've done to the tape.
It was also quite hard to work with because the tape suffers from periods of distortion in the channels due to Jimmy's guitar work, it's slightly peaking, it was hard trying to balance the instruments, create an ambiant sound to the recording, and try to buffer out some of the distortion in the recording, we did the best we could, and we hope that everyone here likes what we've done.
So to summerize, we've done the following things to make this project:
- We've tried to bring out things that were missing in the raw recording (low end), and have tried to balance the instruments as best we can.
- We've tried to reduce some of the distortion in the channels as best we could.
- We've tried to bring out as much of a feeling of ambiance as best we could.
- We've tried to bring out things that were buried under the raw recording (clapping, cheering, commentary) as best we could.
- We've tried to reduce as much tape hiss as possible.
- We've given the recording a gentle volume boost, I apologize if the volume is a little low in the mix, we tried to make the recording a little louder but that made it run a little hot, and caused distortion, so we figured the best thing to do was to give it a lighter touch than a heavy handed one.
In regards to the title name:
We decided that since we were dedicating this project to the artist Banksy, that we'd try to find a way to make a reference to the band, and to graffiti.
So we came up with "Bristol Bombers", "Bombing" is a graffiti reference to painting, and another reference to a Zeppelin is "Bomber".
Hope everyone here will enjoy this.
Cheers!
